Occasionally we get asked about the origins of KGB Security and even less often we get a negative comment about being Russian. Alas nothing could be further from the truth. KGB Security is an acronym from the initials of the owners of KGB. Kel, Geoff and Brock and we are dinky di Aussies as well as brothers.
It all started 33 years ago when we were arguing if our name should be BKG, GBK etc and we finally agreed upon KGB, the thinking was at least people will remember us. Now sadly the real KGB was renowned for being an arm of the then Russian Government. Of course we condemn the suffering this secret tyrannical organisation was responsible for inflicting on the Russian people.
Today KGB Security is owned by Kel and Brock only with Geoff selling his share of the business to pursue other business ventures. Being a family business there is even some new blood entering the organisation with two of Kel and Brocks collective four offspring joining the team.
Kel has always had aspirations to be a “locksmith” starting his traineeship in Melbourne some 43 years ago. Kel then travelled to Brisbane 3 years later to find a more suitable climate and to reconnect with his older brother Geoff. Geoff who had just finished a stint with the Australian Federal Police often spoke about starting a security company where he could use his anti-crime skills.
Brock who had also ventured into the locksmithing industry in Melbourne was then enticed by the concept of joining a family business which Geoff had conceptualized in 1987. The business incorporated into a company in 1988 and changed premises 4 times over the next 33 years to accommodate its continued growth. With staff numbers approaching 20 the company has broadened the services offered and expanded into electronic security and safes whilst strengthening its original core activity of locksmithing.
There have been numerous challenges over the last 33 years including the 1988 recession, the 2008 Global financial crisis and the inundation of KGB’s workshop in the 2011 Brisbane floods. 2020 has now also been added to obstacles encountered by the owners Kel and Brock Phillips.
