The Burg Wachter which is pronounced Burg Watcher by most people is a definite contender for finalist in the Home safe category. Available in 3 sizes the Burg Wachter Combi-Line combines a 30 minute fire rating with a S2 cash rating. The S2 rating is determined under the European testing agency VDS. In short this test measures how hard it is to crack open various safes and then awards a certification. The CL10 safe is light at 44 kg however clever engineering makes up for heavier steel often found in other safes.
The Combiline safe displayed below is the CL10E which comes with a easy to use digital locking mechanism. The door of this safe has a patented "slide and lock" bolt which makes it almost impossible to pry open. I firmly believe ALL safes shoud be bolted down and the Burg Wachter Combi-Line has bolt holes in the bottom and the back of the unit. The Combiline series has a plastic "plug" which is filled with fire resistant material to enhance its rating. I particularly like the anti jimmy pin which is designed to stop the door and frame being spread under such an attack.
These safes are primarily designed as a Domestic Home safe and have a cash rating of $30,000 which I feel is a little too generous and think a $20,000 rating is more suitable. The manufacturer gives this safe a $5000 cash rating when used in a business capacity. Unlike many of the other cheap & nasty safes available spare parts are available for this safe even though over the past 7 years we have seen very few failures. This safe is well priced to compete with the CMI Miniguard series and the Guardall FP series.
