Chubb safes really were the benchmark all other safe makers tried to compete with. Alas they closed their Australian manufacturing plant 25 years ago. Sadly they then imported safes from their Asian factories. These NEWER safes were not in the same league as the older ones. I have a number of quality refurbished Chubb safes that would be perfect for someone looking for a Gold storage safe. These safes are cheaper and often tougher that many new er safes.
The Chubb Pacific Mark 2 – 131 is a great example of a quality Gold safe. Which would be perfect for storing gold bullion. It measures 830 x 650 x 700 MM ( H x W X D ) and weighs 740kg. It has a cash rating of 400,000 and we have upgraded the spin combination to a much easier to use digital lock. When comparing high grade safes I often show clients inside the door space. It then becomes obvious how good the safe is when compared to newer safes. The design and materials they used when making these safes stands along side many modern safes.
The Chubb Pacific Mk2 model 131 has internal measurements of 670 x 490 x 400 mm ( H x w x d ). Even with this volume it would be large enough to protect a HUGE volume of precious metals. Now the smaller second hand high grade gold safes tend be quite rare when compared to the larger safes on the market. This is because most people dont have anywhere to hide a larger safe. Hence they tend to be cheaper or at least close in price to the rarer smaller gold safes.

The black second hand Chubb safe pictured below was birthed originally as a Night Deposit safe. We have expertly removed the drawer deposit mechanism. Then we filled the hole so as it can be used as a Gold storage safe for storing Gold or Bullion. This safe weighs around 1500 kg and has all the defense mechanisms you would find on a Jewellers grade safe. These safe have a cash rating of approx $300,000 and present the ultimate challenge for any would be criminal. A safe of the same size and quality would cost approx $13,000 in todays money.
This safe was made in Sydney about 30 years ago and comes with fixed shelves and a “hidden” compartment in the bottom. I only have 1 of these safes left and this is a really great way to secure gold from criminals. We have removed the tricky and finicky spin combination lock & replaced it with a LaGard digital lock.

When storing Gold or bullion, it is RARE that it will be insured as this cost eats into the gains made, which is really why people invest in gold in the first place. When you do put your gold in a a gold storage safe it (the safe) really has to be able to resist an attack. These attacks usually are by hapless amateurs and RARELY hard core professionals. Often people ask me for a high grade safe that is small and this is quite a hard request to for fill. The reason is a high grade safe (called a jewellers grade safe) needs to have thick walls and when the manufacturers make a small version with thick walls. The inside capacity becomes very small, rendering the safes storage volume unviable.
