It took me a while to do this CMI strongroom door comparison as I could not find another strongroom door worth comparing it to. Up until 2011 there were two other safe companies making strongroom doors in Australia. Lord safe company had a manufacturing plant in Taree until the GFC crippled this once great Aussie company. Chubb Safes Australian distributor (Gunnebo) also sold doors in competition to CMI, however these are made in Asia. Strong room doors can be broken down into two separate grades.
Bankers grade strongroom doors and commercial grade strongroom doors. Its really easy to tell them apart as Bankers grade (sometimes called jewellers grade) are really heavy and very thick. Sales of Bankers grade doors are quite rare as they must be installed onto a vault wall that is extremely strong. Commercial grade strongroom doors are light in comparison, 1400kg versus 400kg. We have seen an increased demand for these doors and until recently the only doors available were the CMI CD2 and CMI CD4.
These 2 doors are well made and are both built around the 12mm steel front barrier plate. They are priced around the $5500 mark plus freight out of Sydney. Boltwork is 32 mm in diameter and should the hinges be cut off the door will stay locked thanks to the “dogging bolts”. Perth based Guardall safes has been selling safes since 1980 and 2 years ago they released their KS strongroom door.
The KS door is built in Asia under License and all in all it’s built to a very high standard. It has the 12 mm plate front and 32 mm boltwork. It also comes standard with a digital lock and high grade German keylock. I particularly like that is comes with “universal handing”. Universal handing means the door can be swapped to swing from the left or the right. This cuts down on the amount of stock that is required and hence the selling price is lower.
Emergency release comes as standard on both doors and the frames are “clam shell” style. Probably the biggest difference is the delivery time. CMI safe company have over the last few years “rationalized” their range and as such many of their safes are now imported. However the CD2 and CD4 are still made in Sydney. Because of this the doors are now “made to order” and the delivery time is 6-8 weeks. To date Guardall have kept good stock levels with a quoted delivery time of 5 days from Weatherill Park in Sydney.
So in closing these doors are very similar in construction and finished quality. We are proud to be Guardall’s premier stockist and as such have good stock levels. Stock of the KS-SR doors are held in our Brisbane warehouse and as with all products we sell are keen to answer any questions you might have. Simply call 1300 556500.
