How to choose a safe is a fairly straight forward process so long as you do at least a small amount of research. Most people want a safe to protect “something” from “someone” and the they usually start with the size of the safe. It is best to look at the purpose or quality of safe you will be needing. Safe fall into many types but only 2 main categories, fire safes and security safes. Fire safes are further broken down again into paper protection or data protection however most security safes have at least some fire “resistance” which is measured in minutes it will keep the inside of the safe below 170 degrees Celsius. This is where paper (passports etc ) start to char, Data starts to disintegrate above 60 degree C.
In life almost always spending more money will get a better product (size for size) and safes is no different. How anyone can think buying a safe from a hardware chain for less than $100 and expect it to withstand the average skilled arsenal of tools is usually down to minimal research being done on safes and their requirements of protection. The yardstick we use to separate different grades of safes is called cash rating (sometimes called insurance rating) and the higher the cash rating the tougher it is made. The more technology that is designed into the safe the harder it is to crack. A top grade bankers safe has super hard alloys, relocking trigger devices, huge locking bolts. A low grade home safe will only have 3 or 4 mm steel sides and cant possibly put up much of a fight against felons.
So work out the value of the items you want to protect, choose a safe with a cash rating that is close to the number and then work out the volume you require inside the safe. A lot of people will pick a “hiding spot” and then try and get a safe to fit. Alas if a felon does end up inside your home you should assume he will find it and then if its up to the safe to do it job and defend an attack. In my opinion the base price for a home safe (home safes have cash ratings of up to $10,000 ) is around $700. Remember every dollar less means the quality is reduced. Instead of a 8 or 10 mm thick steel door it will be reduced to 3 or 4 mm. Its impossible for safe makers ( most of whom are in China now ) to make thick steel doors and walls for $300 or $400.
