Restricted key door locks are locks that have had a special barrel installed that matches a key. They are usually made in very limited numbers. These keys are protected under Australian Patent laws against duplication or manufacture. Ie the key blank makers will not even produce the raw key because they will get sued. These special restricted keys are only available after a legally binding contract which spells out how and who we can issue the keys to has been signed. Typically we install restricted keys where the security of the business (or home ) would be compromised. This can happen if a key is copied without the owners authority. In a large school for example, staff could copy the master key and hand them out willy nilly. Eventually everyone could have master keys.
Restricted key door locks can prevent this from happening. Once the locks & keys are installed and issued. Additional keys can ONLY be created once the correct signature is cross checked with the one we hold on file. Then the restricted keys can then be created ( from the key number) and dispatched. Our key request order form will have the details of the restricted key system. As well as the number of keys required. Courier or registered post is our preferred method of dispatching the keys . However you can also come in to our counter and collect the keys.
Occasionally people turn up at our Brisbane Southside workshop counter wanting us to copy a restricted key. We will then explain that the only way we can do that is after we have received a signed key order. In the event it is from another locksmiths restricted system we explain they can ONLY get the keys from that specific locksmith. Restricted key door locks and keys often negate the need to change the door locks. This usually arises because there is some doubt as to whether the keys have been copied. Such as when a staff member leaves. With a registered key system all that is needed is to request the key be returned and their name crossed off the key register.
Generally restricted key systems are protected from illegal key manufacture by either a registered design. Or the more secure Patent, both these methods work well. However the life cycle of registered design key systems is shorter than patent protected ones. Our Evva 4KS high security system is protected from illegal key creation until 2035. A registered design key system can have up to 10 years protection.
If you have a restricted key system and would like to order keys. Please download, fill out and email this form with the correct signatory. In the event this matches the one we have on file we can cut the key & ship via our courier. Please send to [email protected]
