Quite often people move into a new home or lease a new business premises only to be greeted by a big heavy safe. A lot of the time they are locked. We operate our safe removal and disposal service as an adjunct to our Safe & Vault division. The main reason big heavy safes are left behind is that moving the beast can be a difficult task. Whist it might seam easy it is a dangerous activity for unskilled workers such as furniture movers.
I get numerous calls from desperate shop owners who are frantically working to a deadline. Of course with any specialised field there is a waiting period. We are very customer orientated however co-ordinating 3 men and the associated moving equipment can be logistically challenging. Quite often they simply run out of time and must leave it where it is.
A locked safe is actually less than worthless. The reason being that the current price for scrap metal is $90 per 1000kg so a 400 kg safe will bring approx $36.However the problem is you have to take it to the metal recyclers. In the bad old days dodgy work practices practices were common place. There is NO WAY we could do any of our safe moves the same way now.
Because safe moving can be a high risk activity it is critical to have the appropriate number of workers and the correct equipment. If the safe is locked we have to first crack it open (there is a cost for this task) and the higher the grade the more difficult it is to open.
Once the safe is open we may be able to refurbish and sell it to recover these costs. Elevators, lifts and stairs present the most risky jobs for us. In these situations it is imperative to know the exact weight of the safe. We have hundreds of safe blueprints and safe plans which tell us this information. The starting point to any safe removal and disposal is to get us a picture of the safe. Once we have identified the safe we will come out & do a site specific inspection.
